April 2, 2007

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team cruised to a first-place finish at the MAISA North Spring No. 1 Regatta hosted by N.Y. Maritime over the weekend. The sailors qualified for the America Trophy/MAISA Dinghy Championships after placing first in the A division and second in the B division, out of 19 teams, for a top score of 51 points.

Sophomores Austin Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.) and Morgan Commette (St. Thomas Aquinas/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), and junior Dan Thompson (Mounds View/North Oaks, Minn.) raced in the A division for HWS. They did not finish lower than fourth in all eight races, tallying just 19 points.

Sailing in the B division was first-year Jonathan Bernbaum (St. Georges School/Lake Forest, Ill.), first-year Emily Pelo (Scituate/Scituate, Mass.), and senior Nate Owen (Upper Arlington/Columbus, Ohio). They totaled 32 points after winning three of their eight races.

The sailing team will be back in action on April 6-7 when they race for the Captain Prosser Trophy at Old Dominion University.
