Two Hobart College Statesmen were selected by US SAILING to represent the United States at the 2002 International Sailing Federation World Sailing Games: Hobart and William Smith Sailing Head Coach Scott Iklé, a 1984 graduate of Hobart, and rising senior Matt Herbster (Brewster Academy/Manchester, Mass.). Regatta organizers anticipate 64 nations will be represented in Marseille, France, when the competition, scheduled for June 29 through July 10, gets underway on the Mediterranean in seven classes.

Iklé will serve as head coach for the U.S. Team. The head coach of his alma mater since 1993-94, he has led the Hobart and William Smith sailing program to national prominence, including top-20 rankings by both the coed (20th) and women’s (12th) teams this season. A native of Manhasset, Iklé has led the Colleges to three top-3 finishes at the North American Championships since helping HWS earn its first national championship berth in 1996. The 1998 U.S. Olympic Development Coach of the Year, he also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Team at the 1999 Pan-American Games.

Herbster was one of four men selected to sail for the United States in the 470 class. A two-man boat, he’ll serve as the crew for skipper Mark Teborek. Herbster sailed in several events for HWS this past spring, including a pair of seventh place finishes in the Boston Dinghy Cup and the Truxtun Umsted regattas.

The United States will send two entries apiece to compete in nine of the 10 events: the Formula Windsurfer (women), 470 (men and women), Laser (men), Laser Radial (women), Hobie 16 (men and women), J/22 (women) and J/80 (men). At this time, the U.S. has not confirmed an entry for the men’s Formula Windsurfer event. The U.S. Sailing Foundation has awarded grants to each competitor on the U.S. Team.
