5 Sailors Garner All-American Honors
June 13, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Five Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailors recently received All-American honors from the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). Senior Amanda Callahan (Notre Dame Academy/Canton, Mass.) and junior Alexis Rubin (Edmund Burke/Potomac, Md.) were named to the All-America Crew team, while senior Sam Rogers (Breck School/Excelsior, Minn.) and juniors Ed Norton (Tabor Academy/Fair Haven, N.J.) and John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.) were named to the All-American Skipper honorable mention team. The HWS sailing team enjoyed an outstanding year, qualifying for four of the six North American championships the ICSA sponsors: the Sloop Championship, the Team Race Championship, the Dinghy Championship, and the Womens Championship. The Colleges finished the season ranked fifth in both the coed and women's college rankings by Sailing World. The coed team was ranked first in the nation for two weeks during the fall. Rogers helped the Colleges to their highest championship finish with a second place showing in the Sloop Championship in November. All five All-Americans represented HWS in the Team Race Championship and the Dinghy Championship, leading the Colleges to fourth and seventh place finishes, respectively. Callahan and Rubin were ninth in the B Division of the Womens Championship, as HWS finished 10th overall. Including this years honorees, Hobart and William Smith have had 25 student-athletes garner All-American accolades since 1996. Hobart and William Smith Colleges are coordinate, private, liberal arts institutions, located in Geneva, N.Y. Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women share faculty, facilities, and curriculum, but maintain separate deans offices, athletics programs, student governments, and traditions. Hobart and William Smith field 21 intercollegiate varsity teams. Over the past 30 years, the Colleges have captured 20 national championships and dozens of conference championships. |
