GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College sailing team captured the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Championship on April 21. Securing their second district title in four seasons, the Herons qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Championships in Hawaii on May 28-30.

Over the weekend, 22 races were sailed in light to moderate conditions on Seneca Lake. Eleven races in two divisions took place on modified triangle, olympic and gold cup courses in 5-10 knot winds from the north.

Senior Sarah Angell (Kent Place School/Far Hills, N.J.) and juniors Sonya Smith (Falmouth/Falmouth, Mass.) and Sarah Hawkins (Barrington/Barrington, R.I.) sailed to a first place finish in the A Division with a score of 22. In the B division, juniors Amanda Callahan (Notre Dame Academy/Canton, Mass.) and Jennie Rosthals (Stratford/Houston, Texas) and first-year Kate Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.) finished third, just three points out of the top spot with 30 points.

William Smith, No. 7 in the latest Sailing World college rankings, defeated three of the top four teams in the nation with a score of 52. Top-ranked St. Mary’s College was the runner-up with 64 points, No. 2 Old Dominion University finished third with 67 points, and fourth-ranked Georgetown University was fourth with a score of 86.
Head Coach Scott Iklé said his team’s hard work was the difference this weekend.

“During the last two weeks we had strong practices that gave us the edge to beat some of the best women’s teams in the country,” said Iklé, who was very impressed with his team’s performance. “They did a wonderful job.”

The Hobart and William Smith coed team will get a chance to join the Herons in Hawaii when it competes at the America Trophy on April 27-28, at N.Y. Maritime. The top three teams qualify for the ICSA Championships on June 2-4.
