Hobart grad finalist for Yachtsman of the Year

January 9, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—US Sailing recently announced the six finalists for the 2003 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Award. Andy Horton, a 1998 graduate of Hobart College, is among the six selected after he captured the 2003 International Sailing Federation Match Racing World Championship.

An All-American while at Hobart, Horton had a breakout year in 1999 leading the US Sailing team’s lightning class boat to the gold medal at the XII Pan American Games and teaming up with HWS Head Sailing Coach Scott Iklé to earn a victory at the Lightning North American’s. Just a few weeks later, the native of Shelburne, Vt., posted a strong showing at the Knickerbocker Cup, outracing four other internationally ranked competitors from around the world for a fourth place finish.

The Yachtsman and Yachtswomen of the Year awards were established in 1961 by US Sailing and have been sponsored by Rolex Watch since 1980. Generally considered the sports’ highest individual honor in the United States, the award recognizes outstanding on-the-water achievements throughout the year. The winners will be honored at the New York Yacht Club on Feb. 6.
