Hobart Sloop
Team Qualifies for Nationals
September 23, 2001
ANNAPOLIS, Md..-- Hobart sent juniors Sam Rogers and Bobby Storck with
sophomores Ed Norton and Jeff Sullivan to the MAISA Sloop Championships
at the Naval Academy this weekend. The sailors, competing in J/24s, at
the championship faced light winds all weekend. The winds peaked at six
knots.
On Sunday, in what was to be the second to last race of the series, the
Hobart team trailed the second place team, Old Dominion, by three points.
The Hobart sailors were over the starting line early and had to restart,
putting them behind Old Dominion. However, the Statesmen battled Back to Sailinga second place finish in the race. The Old Dominion Monarchs finshed
fifth, creating a tie for second place, with one race to go. By the end
of the ninth race the wind had ceased and forced the competitors to wait
for 90 minutes before the race committee ended the regatta. Hobart won
the draw in a who-beat-who tie-breaker, securing the second qualifying
spot.
The Middle Atlantic Sloop Championships, held at the closely guarded
Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., was the qualifying event for the Intercolligate
Sloop Championship to be held Nov. 2-4, in South Florida. The top two
teams qualify.
