April 19, 2004

KINGS POINT, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team competed in the Admiral’s Cup hosted by Kings Point this past weekend, finishing seventh of 18 teams with 432 points. Harvard earned the top spot by 97 points, while St. Mary’s and Dartmouth rounded out the top three, respectively.

Seniors John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), Alexis Rubin (Edmund Burke/Potomac, Md.), and sophomore Zach Goldman (Lutheran/Huntington, N.Y.) joined forces in the A division of racing. Totaling 182 points in 18 races, the trio finished among the top-five three times for 13th place overall.

In the B fleet seniors Ed Norton (Tabor Academy/Fair Haven, N.J.), Jeff Sullivan (McQuaid/Rochester, N.Y.), Rubin, and Goldman captured four victories and six finishes in the top-three boats for third place in the division. Their 115 total points was just three shy of winner Harvard’s 112.

Rounding out the group in the C division was first-year Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.). He grabbed a top-five spot six times, including a victory in the seventh race, for eighth place with 135 points.

Ranked third in the latest poll, HWS travels to the MAISA Open and Thompson Trophy next on April 24-25. William Smith will compete in the MAISA Women’s Dinghy Championship that weekend as well.
