HWS qualifies for Coed Dinghy Nationals

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team captured a runner-up finish this weekend in The America Trophy to qualify for the ICSA Dinghy Championships on June 2-4. Sailing on Seneca Lake, HWS scored 92 points to earn second place, while St. Mary’s finished with a regatta-low score of 78. Kings Point garnered the final qualifying spot with a third place finish.

Sailing in the A division were seniors Ed Norton (Tabor Academy/Fair Haven, N.J.) and Jeff Sullivan (McQuaid/Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomores Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.) and Justin Bauer (Portsmouth Abbey/Burlington, Conn.). Earning fourth place on the strength of seven top-three finishes, including victories in the first and last races of the weekend, the group totaled 57 points, just four behind third-place Georgetown.

Seniors John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), Alexis Rubin (Edmund Burke/Potomac, Md.), and Oscar Barney (Marshfield/Coos Bay, Ore.) and sophomore Rob Aspinwall (Tabor Academy/Darien, Conn.) captured five victories and 11 top-three finishes in 14 races to win the B fleet with 35 points.

HWS will compete in the ICSA Dinghy Championships on June 2-4 in Cascade Locks, Ore.
