HWS takes 4th in shortened ICSA Team Championship

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich.--The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team finished fourth in the weather shortened Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Team Race Championship. The 14-team, three-day event was unable to complete all of today's races, wiping out the results and crowning Harvard University champion based on day two's final standings.
The Colleges sent three skippers and three crew to the regatta. Senior Sam Rogers (Breck School/Excelsior, Minn.) and juniors Ed Norton (Tabor Academy/Fair Haven, N.J.) and John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.) were the skippers, while senior Amanda Callahan (Notre Dame Academy/Canton, Mass.), junior Alexis Rubin (Edmund Burke/Potomac, Md.), and first-year Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.) were the crews.
On the first day of the event, the field was divided into two groups of seven, racing for one of the eight spots in Friday's winners round. The second day's racing whittled the field down to four: HWS, Harvard, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and the University of Southern California.
Five of the final six races were completed in Saturday's championship round with St. Mary's poised to grab the title thanks to a 3-0 record, but the final Harvard-USC race wasn't able to start before the 5 p.m. cutoff due to light winds, negating the day's racing. HWS was 0-3 on Saturday and would have finished fourth any way.
The HWS sailing team, which finished 10th in the ICSA Women's Championship earlier this week, will have one more shot at a title beginning tomorrow in the ICSA North American Dinghy Championship.
