Iklé to lead U.S. Sailing Pan Am Team

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Colleges Sailing Head Coach Scott Iklé will serve as the head coach of the U.S. Sailing team at the XIV Pan American Games, Aug. 1-23, 2003, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is making his second trip to the Pan Am Games, having served as an assistant coach for the United States in 1999.
The 1998 U.S. Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year for Sailing, Iklé will lead 13 sailors in seven classes at this year’s games. The 1999 U.S. Sailing Pan Am team won six medals, including a pair of gold medals.
“The Pan Am Games are an awesome experience for sailors,” Iklé said. “It’s an opportunity to represent our country and experience a games environment that you don’t see in sailing that often.”
Now entering his 10th season as the head coach of the HWS sailing team, Iklé has mentored 25 All-Americans since 1996, including five on the 2003 All-America squads. Since 2000, the HWS sailing team has earned 10 berths in Intercollegiate Sailing Association championship events. This past season, HWS participated in four of the ICSA’s six championships, including a second place finish at the ICSA Sloop North Americans. Both the coed and the women’s teams finished the year ranked fifth in the nation.
Last summer, Iklé was the head coach of the U.S. Team at the International Sailing Federation World Sailing Games, capturing a bronze medal in the Women’s Catamaran event.
A 1984 graduate from Hobart College, he holds a bachelor’s degree in economics, and a master’s degree in environmental studies from Long Island University.
