Colin Merrick '01

February 1, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. - Hobart and William Smith Colleges Head Sailing Coach Scott Iklé has announced the appointment of former Statesmen Colin Merrick '01, as assistant coach for the spring season. Merrick served as a part-time assistant during the fall.

Merrick received numerous honors as a four-year member of the Colleges' sailing team. As a first year, he was named the squad's Rookie of the Year, and its MVP following each of the next three seasons. Merrick was a three-time All-American and helped Hobart and William Smith to a second place and two third place finishes at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Championships over his four seasons. He also helped the team capture the Atlantic Coast and MAISA Dinghy Championships in both 1998 and 2000.

Merrick has had success at every level. He was a member of the 1997 Interscholastic Sailing Association High School National Championship team and won the Midwinter U.S. Team Racing Association Championships in 2000 and 2002.

Merrick is no stranger to coaching. Prior to joining Iklé's staff, he served as head coach for both 420 Racing at the Manchester Sailing Association and Opti Racing at the Beverly Yacht Club, as well as an assistant 420 racing coach at the New Bedford Yacht Club.

A native of Portsmouth, R.I., Merrick received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Hobart in May of 2001.
