Merrick rejoins HWS Sailing staff

February 2, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Sailing Head Coach Scott Iklé recently announced that Colin Merrick ’01 will return as the assistant coach for the 2004 season.

A member of the coaching staff since 2002, Merrick helped lead HWS to several national championship races, including a fourth place finish at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ISCA) Team Race Championships in 2003, and the runner-up spot in the ICSA Sloop Nationals in 2002.

A four-year member of the sailing team at Hobart and William Smith, Merrick was a three-time All-American and helped HWS to a second place and two third place finishes at the ICSA National Championships over his four seasons. He also helped the team capture the Atlantic Coast and MAISA Dinghy Championships in 1998 and 2000.

This past year Merrick made a splash in international waters, teaming up with John Cline ’03 to earn sixth place of 16 teams at the International Sailing Federation World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. He qualified for the World Championships after outracing 13 other teams in the Hinman Championship, the United States Team Racing Championship, in 2002.

A native of Portsmouth, R.I., Merrick earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Hobart in 2001.
