O'Malley 4th in MAISA Singlehanded Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—William Smith College senior Mora O’Malley (Totino Grace/Dellwood, Minn.) sailed her way to fourth place of 34 competitors this past weekend at the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Singlehanded Championship hosted by Navy. Anna Tunnacliffe (Perrysburg/Perrysburg, Ohio) of Old Dominion, Jenny Gervais (Charleston, S.C.) from St. Mary’s, and Navy’s Alexa Bestoso (Villa Maria Academy/Erie, Pa.) took the top three spots, respectively, to qualify for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Singlehanded Championship on Nov. 21-23.

Competing in 20 races, O’Malley captured a top-five finish nine times, including victories in the third and eighth races. She scored a total of 171 points, edging the fifth place competitor by just one point.

Junior Emily Barkow (University Lake School/Nashotah, Wis.) also competed for the Herons, finishing ninth with 227 points. Rounding out the William Smith group were junior Kate May (Cranston East/Cranston, R.I.) in 11th and first-year Lauren Anderson (New Canaan/New Canaan, Conn.) with a 13th place finish.
