Sailors capture 3 regattas in weekend racing

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team, ranked fifth in the latest coed rankings, won three regattas and finished in the top five at two others on Sunday. The Colleges' sailors spread out from Annapolis, Md., to Providence, R.I., for an exceptional weekend of sailing.

HWS won the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island, the New York Maritime Open, and the Navy J-24 Regatta, while finishing third in the Admiral's Cup in Kings Point, N.Y. The ninth-ranked William Smith sailing team finished fourth in the Dellenbaugh Women's Trophy in Providence.

HWS wins Moody Trophy
KINGSTON, R.I.--HWS captured the Moody Trophy on the strength of third place finishes in both the A and B divisions. Hobart and William Smith posted a winning score of 142 points, nine better than the second place team from MIT.

HWS beat out the rest of the 17-team field that included top-ranked Harvard, No. 2 St. Mary's, No. 6 Georgetown, and No. 7 Charleston.

Junior John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.) and first-year Molly Lawson (Noble & Greenough School/Duxbury, Mass.) represented HWS in the A division, winning three of the weekends 12 races, while placing in the top six in all but two races.

Sophomore Eric Oppen (Orono/Wayzata, Minn.) and junior Oscar Barney (Marshfield/Coos Bay, Ore.) sailed in the B division for HWS, also winning three races.

HWS dominates field at NY Maritime
NEW YORK--HWS won both the A and B divisions of the New York Maritime Open, finishing 33 points better than second place Georgetown. The Colleges' won 12 of the weekend's 26 races.

Sophomore Lee Sackett (Gilmour Academy/Mentor, Ohio) and first-year Rob Aspinwall (Tabor Academy/Darien, Conn.) won six of the first eight races and never finished lower than fifth for a regatta-low 28 points. Georgetown was second in the A division with 46 points.

Representing HWS in the B division were senior Peter Blain (Grosse Pointe South/Grosse Pointe, Mich.), senior Sarah Hawkins (Barrington/Barrington, R.I.), and first-year Aysegul Duru (Santa Fe/Bodrum Muqlu, Turkey). They too never finished lower than fifth and posted 30 points for the weekend. Navy finished second in the B division with 40 points.

HWS bests No. 2 St. Mary's at Navy J-24 Regatta
ANNAPOLIS, Md.--The Hobart and William Smith sailors beat out nine other teams, including the second-ranked squad from St. Mary's College, to win the Navy J-24 Regatta. HWS finished with 27 points, five better than the second place Seahawks.

Senior Rob Storck (Northport/Northport, N.Y.), sophomore Wiley Wakeman (Groton School/Cohasset, Mass.), first-year Jake Dewey (Hanover/Hyannis Port, Mass.), first-year Tyler Sandberg (Brewster Academy/Riverside, Conn.), and first-year Amory Ross (Basking Ridge, N.J.) won four races and finished second in two others to secure first place.

Sailors take 3rd in Admiral's Cup
KINGS POINT, N.Y.--Fifteen of the nation's top 20 sailing program's competed in the Admiral's Cup regatta this weekend. Fifth-ranked Hobart and William Smith placed third overall behind No. 3 Tufts and top-ranked Harvard.

Eighteen races were sailed in each of three divisions by the 20-team field.

In the A division, senior Sam Rogers (Breck School/Excelsior, Minn.), senior John Cline (St. Georges School/Stuart, Fla.), and junior Alexis Rubin (Edmund Burke/Potomac, Md.) finished fifth with 138 points, 41 points behind the top team from Tufts.

In the B division, junior Ed Norton (Tabor Academy/Fair Haven, N.J.) and first-year Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.) brought home fourth place with 138 points, 49 points behind the front-running boat from St. Mary's.

In the C division, sophomore John Storck (St. Anthony's/Huntington, N.Y.) tied for third with 107 points.

Herons make a splash at Dellenbaugh Trophy
PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The ninth-ranked William Smith sailing team finished fourth in a power-packed, 18-team field at the Dellenbaugh Trophy. The Herons finished fourth overall, besting four of the eight teams ranked ahead of them in the latest poll, on the strength of a second place finish in the B division.

Senior Amanda Callahan (Notre Dame Academy/Canton, Mass.) and sophomore Kate Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.) captured second place in the B division. The Herons finished in the top five in 10 of the weekend's 12 races to card 51 points, second only to the boat from St. Mary's (37).

In the A division, senior Sonja Smith (Falmouth/Falmouth, Mass.), junior Mora O'Malley (Totino Grace/Dellwood, Minn.), sophomore Kate May (Cranston East/Cranston, R.I.), and senior Courtney Wilkins (Hamilton-Wenham/Needham Heights, Mass.) finished 10th with 112 points.
