Sailors fifth at Thompson Trophy

NEW LONDON, Conn.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team closed out its regular season of racing with a fifth place finish at the Thompson Trophy hosted by Connecticut College this past weekend. St. Mary’s captured the win with a weekend low score of 209 points.

Junior John Storck (St. Anthony’s/Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomores Molly Lawson (Noble & Greenough School/Duxbury, Mass.) and Rob Aspinwall (Tabor Academy/Darien, Conn.) four top-five finishes in 18 races in the A division for 12th place.

In the B fleet seniors John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.) and Oscar Barney (Marshfield/Coos Bay, Ore.) outraced everyone in five races and earned a total of 12 top-five finishes to win the division with 82 points. Their next closest competitor was Tufts University with 109 points.

Ranked third in the latest poll, the HWS sailing team will sail again on May 30-June 4, when it travels to Cascade Locks for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Spring Championships.
