Sailors victorious at Cayuga Grant

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team captured another victory this past weekend at the Cayuga Grant hosted by Cornell University. HWS posted a regatta-low score of 51 points to outrace University of Pennsylvania by 18 points. This is the squad’s third victory in the spring racing season.

Sailing in the A division for the Colleges were first-years Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and Nate Owen (Upper Arlington/Columbus, Ohio). The duo combined to win 11 of the 13 races for the weekend and never finished lower than third earning the top spot in the division with 16 points. Pennsylvania was next in line with 34.

First-years John Keating (Main Land Regional/Linwood, N.J.) and Marian Spurrier (Burlington/Burlington, Vt.) competed for HWS in the B fleet, completing the weekend in third place. They grabbed a top-three finish in 10 of the 13 races and earned two victories. Ocean County won the division with 32 points.

Ranked seventh in the most recent poll, HWS will compete again at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Championships on May 26-June 4, in Cascade Locks, Ore. HWS has qualified for the ICSA Dinghy and Team Race Championships, while William Smith earned a spot in the women’s dinghy championship as well.
