Statesmen finish 2nd in Sloop Championship

November 3, 2002

NEWPORT, R.I.--Hobart College finished second in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Sloop Championship this weekend, co-hosted by Brown University and the New York Yacht Club. Seniors Sam Rogers (Breck School/Excelsior, Minn.) and Rob Storck (Northport/Northport, N.Y.) and junior Jeff Sullivan (McQuaid/Rochester, N.Y.) finished the 10 race championship tied with the College of Charleston, but the Cougars won the tie break, finishing ahead of the Statesmen in the final race.

Hobart won a race and finished second in three others to grab first place following the first two days of racing. The Statesmen held a six-point lead over Charleston heading into the final race, but the Cougars finished second to Hobart's eighth to steal the championship.

The Statesmen qualified for the North American Championship by capturing their first Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sloop Championship on Sept. 29 at Navy.
