September 6, 2003

KINGS POINT--Hobart sailors junior John Storck (St. Anthony’s/Huntington, N.Y.) and senior John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.) enjoyed a highly successful season-opening weekend. The Statesmen finished second and third, respectively, in the Kings Point Laser Open. The top four sailors qualified for the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Singlehanded Championship at Kings Point on Oct. 11-12.

Storck edged Pearce by just a single point, 34-35. Kings Point’s Dave Wright was the overall winner with 24 points. Hobart junior Wiley Wakeman (Groton School/Cohasset, Mass.) placed eight out of 18 sailors with 62 points.

The regatta was limited to one day of racing due to a lack of wind on Sunday, but the Statesmen made the most of their time on the water on Saturday. Storck placed in the top three in four of the seven races and never finished lower than eighth. Pearce recorded four top five showings, including a win in the sixth race.
