September 28, 2003

KINGS POINT, N.Y.—Hobart sailors junior Wiley Wakeman (Groton School/Cohasset, Mass.) and first-year Ben Wicks (Sa Hus/Southampton, Bermuda) finished first and second, respectively this past weekend at the Laser Qualifier North hosted by USMMA. The top three finishers qualify for the Mid Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Singlehanded Championship at Kings Point on Oct. 11-12.

Wakeman edged Wicks by seven points, garnering nine first-place finishes in 18 races for a low score of 59. Wicks was able to hold off a late surge by the pack, sailing to 12 top-three finishes, including three victories for a total of 66 points on the weekend.

Senior Jeff Sullivan (McQuaid/Rochester, N.Y.) and first-year John Keating (Main Land Regional/Linwood, N.J.) also competed, finishing the weekend in the sixth and eighth spots, respectively.

Wakeman and Wicks will join teammates John Storck (St. Anthony’s/Huntington, N.Y.), John Pearce (Ithaca/Ithaca, N.Y.), and Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) in the MAISA Singlehanded Championship on Oct. 11-12 at Kings Point.
