Hobart’s Boswell Field gets facelift

Workers from R.M. Landscape removed the existing surface on Boswell Field and replaced it with fresh sod.

A special machine takes the rolls of sod and lays them in place on the Boz.

The freshly laid sod will blend in with the existing grass and be ready in plenty of time for kickoff on Sept. 27.

GENEVA, N.Y.—Cher, Michael Douglas, Paul Newman, Burt Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor.

Add another name to the list of celebrity facelifts: Hobart’s Boswell Field.

The home of the Statesmen football and lacrosse teams had its surface replaced from goal line to goal line and sideline to sideline, 45,000 square feet of sod, by R.M. Landscape of Rochester. One of the biggest landscape firms in the area, R.M. Landscape has worked on several athletic fields, including the Rochester Red Wings’ Frontier Field.

The Boz, which opened in the fall of 1974, will begin its 29th season as the home of Hobart football and lacrosse at 1 p.m., on Sept. 27, when the Statesmen host Union in a UCAA match up. While small sections of the “Boz” have been replaced from time to time, this is the first time that the entire playing surface has been resodded.

The project was necessitated by the sloppy conditions that Mother Nature threw at the football team in late November. Snow and rain during the Rensselaer game—a 34-27 win that clinched the UCAA Championship and Hobart’s first undefeated season in the league—and the NCAA first round game against John Carroll turned the Boz into a quagmire.

The project was completed over a two-week period this month at a cost of $30,000.
