KEUKA PARK, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team gave Interim Head Coach Lindsay Drury a 63-54 win in her Heron debut at Keuka this afternoon. Sophomore guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) led William Smith with 15 points.

The Storm (0-1) used a 12-4 run late in the first half to erase a six-point deficit and take a 30-26 lead into halftime. Vespa led all scorers at the break with 10 points.

After the intermission, the teams remained locked in a back-and-forth struggle. Tied at 38-all with 12:54 remaining, Heron first-year forward Lauren Samuelson (Olean/Olean, N.Y.) sparked a 14-0 William Smith run with five of her eight points in the game.

From that point on, Keuka didn’t reduce its deficit to single digits until the final five seconds of the contest.

William Smith shot 48 percent from the floor in the second half and 39 percent for the game, while limiting the Storm to just 29 percent for the game (24 percent in the second half).

Joining Vespa in double digits in the scoring column, was junior guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) with 11 points and team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (5). Junior guard Emily Alcott (Waterville/Waterville, N.Y.) added nine points for the Herons.

William Smith returns to action on Nov. 29, when the Herons travel to Nazareth. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
