BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team needed some last minute heroics to knock off a pesky Keuka College squad 68-66 in the first round of the Brockport Invitational. Senior guard Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) led the way with 17 points, hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, and nine steals.

The Herons (4-1) led by as many as 18 in the first half, before settling into a 37-28 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime. Young had a game-high 12 points at the intermission.

In the second half, William Smith raised its edge to as many as 13, but the Storm (2-2) whittled away at its deficit. Keuka grabbed its only lead of the game, 66-65, on a three-point play with 1:26 remaining.

The Herons reclaimed the lead with 12 seconds left on a layup by junior guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.). The Storm got off a shot to try to retake the lead, but first-year guard Latasha Coney (Lyons/Lyons, N.Y.) blocked the shot, the fifth rejection by the Herons on the night. Coney, who grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled, made one of two free throws to close out the scoring.

The Storm did get off a desperation three, but the heave was off the mark.

Sophomore forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) also reached double digits in scoring, adding 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the winning effort.
