GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team avenged its only conference loss, defeating visiting Union College 76-58 in Liberty League action this evening. Junior guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) led the charge with a career-high 22 points.

Foote scored 11 of the team’s first 13 points as the Herons built a 16-point lead before nine minutes had run off the clock. William Smith (14-4, 7-1 Liberty) totally dominated the opening stanza, grabbing a 20-point lead on a pair of free throws by senior guard Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) at the 7:47 mark. The Herons took the largest lead of the frame into the locker room after a Foote layup beat the buzzer to make it a 46-24 game.

Foote scored 20 in the first half, one shy of her previous career-high, on 7-of-9 shooting, including a three-pointer, and a 5-for-5 showing at the line. Young had 10 at the break and finished with 12.

William Smith shot 63 percent in the first half and cooled off only slightly after the break, finishing the night shooting 54.7 percent. Union (13-6, 7-2) was a dismal 32.3 percent in the first half, 35.1 percent for the game.

The Dutchwomen made a brief threat to climb back into the contest after break, scoring the first seven points of the second half to make it a 15-point game, but the Herons responded with a 10-0 run to squash the uprising. William Smith led by as many as 26 before settling into the 18-point win.

Sophomore forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) also reached double digits for the home team, adding 12 points.

First-years Michelle Rogers (Clarence/Clarence, N.Y.) and Marissa Dwyer (Duanesburg/Duanesburg, N.Y.) paced Union with 12 points apiece, while sophomore Devon Ciliberto (New Paltz/New Paltz, N.Y.) contributed 10. Senior Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y), who torched William Smith for 31 points two weeks ago, managed just six tonight on 2-of-9 shooting.

The Herons are back in action on Feb. 4, when they host Skidmore (8-12, 2-7). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Thoroughbreds lost at Hamilton tonight, 59-47.
