ELMIRA, N.Y.--Three Herons reached double digits in scoring as the William Smith basketball team halted Elmira's nine-game winning streak with a 70-58 win on the Soaring Eagles' home floor. Senior guard Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) led the way with a game-high 18 points, including four three-pointers, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Senior forward Tanya Richvalsky (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) added a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points.
Elmira (9-5) grabbed the lead early, scoring the first five points of the game. The Herons (9-3) responded with a definitive 14-2 run that put them in the lead for good. Young scored seven of William Smith's points during the surge.
The Herons led 35-29 at halftime thanks to some very hot shooting. William Smith connected on 50.9 percent from the field, including a season's best 66.7 (8-12) from beyond the arc. The Herons were particularly effective before halftime, shooting 55.6 percent from the field, including 4-of-5 from long range.
William Smith scored the first eight points of the second half to grow their lead to double digits, an advantage they maintained through the final buzzer.
The Herons return to conference play on Jan. 20, when they travel to Skidmore for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
