Parker, Vespa grab Liberty League weekly awards; Herons announce Liberty League Tournament game times

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior forward Ivy Parker (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) and first-year guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) were named the Liberty League Co-Forward and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The pair led William Smith to a 3-0 record and the conference’s regular season crown.

The Herons (16-7, 11-3 Liberty) closed out the regular season with three wins last week, topping Hamilton 67-53 in Clinton, and returning home to defeat Rensselaer 57-40 and Vassar 58-46 and secure the program’s first regular season title since 2000.

Parker led William Smith in scoring and rebounding, contributing 10.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg. At Hamilton, she hit all four of her shots from the floor and finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Against RPI, Parker scored 13 points, grabbed six boards, and handed out two assists without a turnover. On Senior Day against Vassar, Parker scored eight points and pulled down seven boards in just 13 minutes of work.

Vespa collected her fifth Rookie of the Week award, averaging 10.0 ppg, 6.3 apg, 4.7 rpg, and 2.3 spg. Against the Continentals, she dished out nine assists, scored seven points, grabbed six boards, and made four steals. Against the Red Hawks, Vespa scored a team-high 15 points, set up seven other baskets, collected six caroms, and made three steals. Against the Brewers, she scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 from the line.

The Herons will host the Liberty League Women’s Basketball Tournament in Bristol Gym, Feb. 25-26. Third-seeded Union College (17-7) and No. 2 St. Lawrence University (14-9) will open Friday’s play at 1 p.m., in Bristol Gym. Top-seeded William Smith (16-7) and No. 4 Hamilton College (15-9) will tangle in the second semifinal at 6 p.m. The championship game will tip off at 2 p.m., on Feb. 26.
