Richvalsky scores 13 in loss to Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team lost just its second game of the season, falling in the championship game of the Brockport Invitational to the host Golden Eagles, 56-46. Senior forward Tanya Richvalsky (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) paced the Herons with 13 points and eight rebounds.
William Smith (4-2) led for the first 19 minutes of the contest, building its advantage to as many as nine. Sophomore forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) completed a traditional three-point play at the 7:04 mark of the opening stanza to give the Herons a 23-14 lead.
The Golden Eagles (4-4) closed the first half on a 13-2 to take a 27-25 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Brockport inflated its lead to 10 less than two minutes in, but William Smith responded with a 9-0 surge to get within one, 37-36. Richvalsky capped the run with another traditional three-point play.
The Golden Eagles promptly ran their lead back up to 10 with another 9-0 run. The Herons made one last push, closing within 50-46 on a three-point play by junior guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.), but Brockport scored the final six points of the game, all from the free throw line.
The Herons held the Golden Eagles to just 37 percent shooting from the floor, but shot just 24 percent themselves.
William Smith returns to action on Jan. 5 when the Herons square off with Wheaton (Ill.) in the first round of the Whittier (Calif.) Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PST.
