GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith first-year Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) was named the Liberty League Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week this afternoon.

On Nov. 23, against Brockport, Vespa scored a game-high 16 points, connecting on 6-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from three-point land. She was at her best when the Herons needed her most, scoring twice in the final 20 seconds to erase a two-point William Smith deficit. Vespa tied the game at 56 with a steal at midcourt and a breakaway layup. Then, with 2.6 seconds remaining, she sank two free throws to give William Smith the 58-56 win.

Through two games, Vespa is second on the team in scoring (13.5 ppg), assists (2.5/g), and steals (2.5/g), and leads the team in free throw percentage (.750). The Herons (2-0) return to action at 2 p.m., on Dec. 4, at Ithaca.a for a 2 p.m., tipoff.
