Vespa earns second Liberty League Rookie Award

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second time this season, William Smith College first-year guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) has been named the Liberty League Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week. She earned her first conference award two weeks ago.
Vespa shot 50 percent from the floor and averaged 17.0 ppg in an 0-2 week for the Herons. In a 63-50 loss at seventh-ranked Rochester, she scored 13 points, including a 6-of-7 showing from the line, while also recording three steals. Three nights later, she nearly single-handedly rallied William Smith past Nazareth, producing game-highs in points (21), assists (7), and steals (4). While ultimately the Golden Flyers prevailed 67-62, Vespa connected on 7-of-12 from the floor.
For the week, Vespa shot 50 percent from the floor (10-20), 50 percent from long range (2-4), and 75 percent from the line (12-16). She leads the Herons in scoring (13.4 ppg), assists (17), and three-point field goal percentage (.625, 5-of-8).
William Smith has a 2-3 record and returns to action at 7 p.m., on Jan. 3, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
