Vespa earns 3rd Liberty League weekly award

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the third time this season, William Smith first-year guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) was named the Liberty League Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week. She led William Smith to a 3-0 week with 11.7 ppg, 6.7 apg, 3.3 rpg, and 3.3 spg.
Vespa began the week with 16 points, six assists, and four steals in a 79-72 win over Elmira. On Friday in a 54-26 win over Skidmore, she recorded seven points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals. The following afternoon, Vespa closed out the week with her first career double-double, scoring 12 points, while handing out 10 assists against just one turnover in a 73-59 win over Union.
For the season, Vespa leads the team in scoring (11.5 ppg) and assists (4.85 apg), and ranks in the top-10 in the conference in assists (1st), assist-to-turnover ratio (1st, 1.66), free throw percentage (5th, .708), scoring (6th), and steals (7th, 2.69).
The Herons (9-4, 4-0 Liberty) have won six in a row, the program’s longest winning streak since the 1999-2000 season. William Smith will host Hamilton College on Jan. 25, in Bristol Gym. The first place Herons and the Continentals (7-6, 2-2) will tip off at 7 p.m.
