Vespa named to ECAC Upstate All-Star team
March 24 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) was recently named to the ECAC Division III Women’s Upstate Basketball Second Team as voted by the coaches. Vespa was one of just two first-years selected to the first or second teams.
The 2004 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, Vespa led the Herons in scoring (11.5 ppg), assists (5.07 apg), and assist to turnover ratio (1.71), and was second in steals (2.50 spg). Her 142 assists this year rank third on the Herons’ single season list and are the most by a William Smith first-year.
A five-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week honoree, Vespa notched double figures in 18 contests and recorded at least one assist in all 28 games. She scored a career-high 21 points, adding seven assists and four steals against Nazareth on Dec. 10, to clinch her second Liberty League Rookie of the Week award. Vespa recorded her first career double double with 12 points and 10 assists in a win over conference foe Union College.
Also a major contributor on the defensive end of the floor, Vespa made at least one steal in 25 games and recorded a career-high six in a win over Clarkson.
Led by first-year Head Coach Olympia Scott-Richardson, William Smith finished the 2004-05 season with a 20-8 record, captured the Liberty League regular season and tournament crowns, and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Making their first appearance in NCAA postseason play since 2000, the Herons knocked off a pair of 20-win teams en route to the sectional semifinal round before losing to then second-ranked Bowdoin, 63-51.
