GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) was named the Rochester Area College Athletics Female Athlete of the Week after leading the Herons into the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Vespa put in 16 foul shots in two games to lead the Herons to NCAA Tournament wins at home against Washington & Jefferson and on the road at Oswego State. She scored 15 points in each game and averaged five rebounds, four assists and two steals per contest. Vespa made 72.7 percent of her foul shots in the two games.
The Liberty League Rookie of the Year, Vespa leads the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and assists (5.2 apg), and is second in steals (2.6 spg). Her 141 assists this year rank fourth on the Herons' single season list and are the most by a William Smith first-year. Vespa ranks 18th in assists in Division III through Feb. 27.
The Herons’ NCAA Tournament run continues at 6 p.m., on March 11, in Scranton, Pa., when William Smith (20-7) will face Bowdoin College (25-2) in the University of Scranton’s Long Center.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, students, and children. A limited number of advance sale tickets will be available for purchase through the William Smith Athletics Department. From 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., on March 8, fans can purchase tickets in Winn-Seeley Gym, Room 101.
