Herons hand Golden Eagles 1st loss, 72-59

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team handed SUNY Brockport its first loss of the season, 72-59, to capture the Brockport Invitational. Junior forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) earned a spot on the All-Tournament team with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds for the Herons.
William Smith (4-3) rode a dominating first half to an impressive victory. The Herons shot 44 percent from the floor before the break, while harassing their hosts into shooting 19 percent, including 0 for 10 from beyond the arc. William Smith scored the first eight points of the game and charged out to a 17-2 lead. The team carried its biggest lead, 21 points, into halftime, 34-13.
To start the second half, the Golden Eagles (7-1) used a 13-4 run to creep within 11, but got no closer. The Herons responded with an 11-2 run of their own to reassert their control of the contest. Czajkowski keyed the surge with nine points.
Guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) joined her classmate on the All-Tournament team after scoring 15 points, grabbing five rebounds, and handing out five assists. Senior guard Paula Foote (Sidney/Sidney, N.Y.) was the third Heron named All-Tournament. She chipped in nine points and four assists.
Kim Schon scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to pace Brockport, while Kiomi Matthews added 11.
William Smith defeated CUNY York in the opener of the Brockport Invitational, 62-36, on Friday. First-year forwards Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockway, N.Y.) and Robyn Capoto (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) led the Herons. Cunningham scored a game-high 16 points, while Capoto corralled a game-high 11 rebounds.
Off until the New Year, William Smith will return to action on Jan. 2, when the Herons travel to Hartwick. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
