GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith Director of Athletics Deb Steward recently announced the appointment of Michelle Walsh to serve as an assistant coach for the Heron basketball team. Walsh comes to campus after two seasons as an assistant coach at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.

“I’m excited to have Michelle join our Heron staff,” Steward said. “She understands the value of a women’s college and will challenge our student-athletes to perform on the court and in the classroom.”

Walsh earned a master’s degree in exercise and sport studies from Smith this past May. As an assistant coach, she played an active role in all aspects of the Pioneers’ basketball program. Additionally, Walsh managed the indoor site of the 2005 Seven Sisters Tennis Tournament.

A native of Haverhill, Mass., Walsh began her coaching career at Plymouth State University in 1998. She served as an assistant coach for the Panthers’ field hockey and lacrosse programs. Earlier that year, Walsh earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Swarthmore College. A three-sport athlete for the Garnet, she was a four-time letterwinner in basketball, field hockey, and softball, serving as a team captain in all three sports during her senior year.

On the hardwood, Walsh played in 96 career games and averaged 6.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. She closed out her career with 597 points, 554 rebounds, 191 steals, and 62 blocks, and is currently ranked sixth in career steals for Swarthmore. Walsh also holds the ninth spot for career free throw attempts (273) and free throws made (172), and holds the 10th spot on the career assists list with 147.

In addition, Walsh tallied 35 career points (16 goals, 13 assists) for the field hockey team, and as a senior on the softball team she recorded a .500 batting average that included 56 hits, 52 RBI, 13 doubles, seven triples, and four home runs.
