2 Herons earn Liberty League awards

GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College basketball players were honored by the Liberty League this afternoon. Junior forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) was named the Co-Forward of the Week, while first-year forward Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) earned the Rookie of the Week award for the second week in a row.

In a 2-1 week for the Herons, Czajkowski averaged 14.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, while shooting 52.6 percent from the floor. In a 79-68 loss to Hamilton, she scored a team-high 19 points and collected 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. At Vassar, Czajkowski notched four points, four rebounds, and two blocked shots in just 17 minutes of the 52-39 win. She closed out the week by knocking down 10-of-15 from the floor and posting a team-high 21 points in a 59-57 victory at Rensselaer.

For the season, Czajkowski is averaging 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds, and shooting .498 from the floor. She ranks third in the conference in scoring, fourth in field goal percentage, and seventh in rebounding. A two-time All-Liberty League pick, Czajkowski has earned the Forward of the Week award four times this season.

Cunningham averaged 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals, while shooting 60 percent from the floor and 90.9 percent from the free throw line. Against the Continentals, she scored seven points, grabbed five boards, and recorded three steals. Against the Brewers, Cunningham registered her second double-double of the season on a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. She knocked down 9-of-12 shots from the floor vs. Vassar. Cunningham closed out the week with 11 points and seven rebounds at the expense of the Red Hawks.

For the season, Cunningham is averaging 11.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 0.65 blocked shots, while shooting .514 from the floor and .827 from the free throw line. She ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage and free throw percentage, eighth in blocked shots, and 10th in scoring and rebounding. Cunningham has won four of the past five Liberty League Rookie of the Week awards.

William Smith (10-7, 4-3) is back in action on Feb. 2, when the Herons host Union. The Liberty League showdown is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. On Feb. 3, Skidmore visits Bristol Gym for another Liberty League fray. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

William Smith will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day with halftime activities and postgame autograph sessions following both games.
