SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Tied 19-19 midway through the first half, Union College used a 14-0 run to seize control of its Liberty League Women's Basketball showdown with William Smith College this afternoon. The Dutchwomen carried a 41-30 lead into halftime and went on to an 87-66 victory.

Junior guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) led the Herons (8-6, 2-2 Liberty) with 21 points, six assists, and four of the team's six steals. Vespa knocked down eight of her 10 shots from the floor, including 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. First-year Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) was the only other William Smith player to post double digits in the scoring column on 13 points to go with a game-high three blocked shots.

Rachel Ormsby and Maria Tobin paced four Union players in double figures with 19 points apiece. Tobin was the central figure in the Dutchwomen's first half surge, scoring eight points during the run, including a pair of threes.

William Smith scored the first seven points of the second half, closing to within four, 41-37, on a three-pointer by Vespa, but that was as close as the Herons would get.

Union (8-7, 4-1) responded to the threat with a 16-6 run that pushed its lead back into double digits for good.

The Dutchwomen converted 21 William Smith turnovers into 25 points and outrebounded their guests 40-33.

The Herons are back in action on Jan. 23, when they host Hamilton College. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 7 p.m.
