Cunningham carries Herons past Brewers
January 26, 2007
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—First-year forward Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) scored a season-high 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the William Smith College basketball team to a 52-39 Liberty League victory over Vassar College. She shot 9-of-12 from the floor and converted all four of her free throw attempts.
The Herons (9-7, 3-3) shot 46 percent from the floor in the first half, but committed 11 turnovers and carried just a three-point edge, 26-23, into halftime.
After the break, William Smith turned the tables after the break, keeping its turnovers in single digits, while forcing the Brewers (6-10, 1-5) into 12. The Herons never trailed in the second stanza, breaking the last of three ties with six straight points. The surge was part of a 14-2 run that pushed William Smith's lead into double digits for good.
Vassar shot just 24.6 percent from the floor for the game, the second lowest shooting percentage by a Heron opponent this season (Nazareth shot just 24 percent on Nov. 29).
Cunningham was the only player in double figures on the night. The first-year is leading William Smith in scoring (13.5), rebounding (7.3), field goal percentage (.585), and blocked shots (1.3) since conference play began on Jan. 12.
Sophomore guard Latasha Coney (Lyons/Lyons, N.Y.) added eight points for the Herons. First-year forward Robyn Capoto (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) pulled down 10 rebounds, while senior guard Emily Alcott (Waterville/Waterville, N.Y.) dished out a game-high six assists.
Elise Okusami led Vassar with nine points, while Rachel Cerlen added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
William Smith is back in action on Jan. 27, when the Herons travel to Rensselaer. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
