Cunningham grabs another Liberty honor

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year forward Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) was named the Liberty League Women’s Basketball Forward of the Week today by the conference office. In three must-win games, she led the Herons to a 3-0 week, averaging 19.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocked shots.

In William Smith’s 68-66 win at Hamilton, Cunningham scored a season-high 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting and a 6-for-6 showing at the line, collected a team-high seven rebounds, and came up with two steals. She produced her third double-double of the season in a 60-45 win over RPI, posting game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocks and two steals. Cunningham closed out the regular season with another double-double on 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds as the Herons knocked off Vassar 72-51. For the week, she shot 53.8 percent from the floor and 88.2 percent from the free throw line.

This is the fifth consecutive week Cunningham’s excellence has been recognized by the Liberty League. In the four previous weeks, she was named the Rookie of the Week.

Heading into this weekend’s Liberty League Tournament, Cunningham is averaging 12.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 0.7 blocked shots. She is shooting 52 percent from the floor and 82.6 percent from the line. Cunningham ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage and free throw percentage, seventh in scoring, and ninth in rebounding and blocked shots.

William Smith is back in action on Feb. 23, when the fourth-seeded Herons travel to top-seeded St. Lawrence University. Tipoff of the Liberty League Tournament semifinal is scheduled for 8 p.m.
