ONEONTA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team won its third consecutive game, defeating Hartwick 84-76 in Binder Gym tonight. Heron senior guard Paula Foote led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including three three-pointers.

Three of Foote’s teammates also reached double digits in the scoring column. Junior guard Marisa Vespa notched 20 points, seven steals, and six assists, while junior forward Stephanie Czajkowski and first-year forward Erin Cunningham chipped in 14 points apiece.

Lindsay Wilson led the Hawks (2-5) with 22 points, while Jenny Knight recorded a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.

A back-and-forth affair, Hartwick seized its final lead of the night when Wilson hit three straight free throws to put the Hawks up 68-66. William Smith (5-3) responded with a 7-0 run to go up 73-68. Cunningham was the central figure in the effort, scoring four of the first five points in the surge. The Herons sealed the win thanks to Vespa’s 4-for-4 effort at the charity stripe in the last 63 seconds. She was 9-of-11 for the night.

William Smith is back in action on Jan. 5, when the Herons take on Lincoln in the first round of the Moravian Tournament.
