CANTON, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team posted an impressive 60-47 victory at St. Lawrence today. The Liberty League win snapped the Saints' 20-game winning streak and gave them their first league loss.
First-year Erin Cunningham led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds. Junior Kristen Suatoni and senior Paula Foote both contributed 10 points to the triumph. Junior Marisa Vespa notched a game-high eight assists, two more than the entire St. Lawrence team.
The Herons (11-10, 5-6) shot 47.1 percent from the floor, including 53.8 percent in the second half.
Katie Palmer led SLU (22-2, 11-1) with 19 points, while Jamie Wolff contributed 11. St. Lawrence shot just 32.2 percent from the floor and committed 20 turnovers.
William Smith trailed by one, 26-25, at halftime, but a Vespa three-pointer at the 17:20 mark of the second half put the Herons in front for good and sparked a 9-0 run.
Palmer scored back-to-back baskets to trim the lead to four, but Cunningham made consecutive field goals of her own to quell the threat. William Smith pushed its lead into double digits with 8:38 remaining and didn't let its advantage dip below nine from that point on.
William Smith is back in action on Feb. 13, when the Herons travel to Hamilton. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
