Late basket lifts Skidmore over William Smith, 57-55
February 3, 2007
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team dropped a heart-breaking 57-55 Liberty League decision to visiting Skidmore College in Bristol Gym this afternoon. Sophomore guard Kellye Caufield (Masuk/Monroe, Conn.) scored a layup with 5.5 seconds remaining to give the Throughbreds the lead to finish with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Fouled on the play, Caufield missed the free throw and the Herons controlled the rebound and called timeout with 1.6 seconds remaining. William Smith got off a desperation three attempt from 30 feet out, but the effort hit the right side of the iron and bounced away.
Heron first-year forward Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) led all scorers with 19 points, while junior forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) added a double-double on 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
First-year forward Dana Leonard (Cooperstown/Cooperstown, N.Y.) led four Thoroughbreds in double digits with 16 points, while first-year guard Sharyln Harper (Holderness School/New York, N.Y.) and senior forward Krystal Coke (Poly Prep Country Day/Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
William Smith led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but Skidmore managed to whittle that advantage down to five, 32-27, at halftime.
After the break, the Herons led by as many as eight, 44-36 with 11:45 to go, but the Thoroughbreds wipe that out with an 8-0 run. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way. Leonard tied the game on a layup with 52 seconds left. William Smith was called for a charge on its ensuing possession, setting the game-winning play.
Skidmore shot 41.8 percent from the floor and hit six three pointers, while limiting William Smith to 33.3 percent shooting. The Herons did outrebound their guests 46-35.
William Smith is back in action on Feb. 9, when the Herons travel to Clarkson. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Skidmore returns home for a contest against Rensselaer at 6 p.m. on Feb. 9.
