Union defeats William Smith, 55-42
February 2, 2007
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team got a game-high 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds from first-year forward Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.), but visiting Union College stole the Liberty League decision 55-42 in Bristol Gym tonight. The Dutchwomen improve to 10-9 overall, 6-3 in the conference, while the Herons slip to 10-8, 4-4.
Union scored the first four points of the game and never trailed. The Dutchwomen carried their biggest lead of the first half into halftime, 30-19, courtesy of an 8-0 run over the final 2:30.
After the break, William Smith managed to whittle its deficit down to six on two occasions, but Union responded to the second threat with seven unanswered points, including five by sophomore guard Maria Tobin (Bishop Maginn/Schenectady, N.Y.), to push its lead back into double digits for good.
Senior forward Krystal Hammond (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.) led the Dutchwomen’s balanced scoring efforts with a team-high nine points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Selin Whitham (South Windsor/South Windsor, Conn.), sophomore forward Michelle Rogers (Clarence/Clarence, N.Y.), and Tobin each contributed eight points. Whitham also handed out a game-high four assists.
The Herons outrebounded their guests 41-33, but Union won nearly every other statistical category, including points off turnovers (19-9), points in the paint (28-18), and bench points (21-7). The Dutchwomen shot just 33.3 percent from the floor, but limited William Smith to a mere 25.5 percent.
William Smith is back in action on Feb. 3, when the Herons host Skidmore. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live coverage can be accessed online. Union travels to Hamilton tomorrow for a 2 p.m. start.
