Hamilton threes add up to Heron setback
January 23, 2007
GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hamilton basketball team sank 11 three-pointers en route to a 79-68 Liberty League victory over William Smith. Continental sophomore guard Molly Kane (VVS/Sherrill, N.Y.) led all scorers with 27 points, connecting on 7-of-8 from beyond the arc.
The Herons (8-7, 2-3) got off to a fast start, building an 11-point lead 11 minutes into the contest. Junior guard Marisa Vespa (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) had the hot hand in the early going, earning assists on five of William Smith’s first seven field goals. The outburst pushed her past Julie Perry ’89 into third place on the Herons career assists list. Vespa recorded 14 points, 10 assists, and six steals before fouling out.
The home team still held a 10-point lead with just under eight minutes left in the first half, but that’s when the long range shots started to fall. Hamilton (9-4, 3-2) went on a 15-0 run, kick-started by Kane and keyed by junior guard Jessica Barrows (Old Saybrook/Old Saybrook, Conn.) who dropped in a pair of threes and eight of her 11 points during the surge.
The push helped the Continentals carry a 37-34 lead into halftime.
The second half started off as a tightly contested affair. The lead changed hands six times and was tied on six occasions before Hamilton seized control. With William Smith leading 53-50, the Continentals went on an 11-0 run that included threes by Kane and junior forward Pumla Sathula (St. Anne’s-Belfield School/Soweto, South Africa). Sathula finished with 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Junior forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, N.Y.) contributed a second double-double for the Herons, notching a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Latasha Coney (Lyons/Lyons, N.Y.) also pulled down 10 boards.
Sophomore center Sydney Fasulo (Lancaster Country Day School/Lancaster, Pa.) recovered from early foul trouble to post 11 points for Hamilton.
William Smith is back in action on Jan. 26, when the Herons travel to Vassar. Tipoff in Poughkeepsie is scheduled for 6 p.m.
