Bombers shoot lights out, down Herons

December 6, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Ithaca College shot a lights out 63 percent from behind the arc in the first half to down William Smith College 77-59 in basketball action this afternoon in Bristol Gym. Bomber senior Jennie Swatling (Mount Abram/Strong, Maine) led all scorers with 14 points.

The Bombers scored the first six points of the game, but William Smith (2-1) responded with five straight points of their own to keep the game close. Despite the Herons’ best defensive efforts, Ithaca (2-1) could not miss, going on a 20-4 run sparked by ten points by Swatling over the next six minutes to take a 26-9 lead midway through the half.

The Bombers took a 44-26 lead into the break after a stellar 7-11 shooting performance from the three point line and 17-30 (56.7 percent) overall.

Ithaca continued to its tough defense and solid shooting in the second frame not allowing the Herons to get any closer than 16 points. William Smith matched the Bombers’ 33 second half points, but the first half deficit proved to be too much for the Herons to overcome. The Herons shot just 31 percent (17-54) from the field for the game.

All 12 Herons got in the scoring column, with first-year guard Anne Hellebush (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) pacing the team with 10 points. Junior Ivy Parker (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) chipped in eight points, while sophomore Tanya Richvalsky (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) led the Herons on the glass with six boards.

William Smith is back in action on Dec. 9, hosting third-ranked University of Rochester at 8 p.m., in Bristol Gym.
