Cornwell named Center of the Week

GENEVA, N.Y.--William Smith College basketball player Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's Center of the Week after a 2-0 start to 2002. The senior averaged 22 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game as the Herons defeated Washington College and host Frostburg State to capture the Showdown in Snowtown Tournament.

Against Washington on Jan. 4, Cornwell nailed a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to force overtime. She had a season-high 29 points and 13 rebounds as William Smith went on to the 82-76 double-overtime victory. In the championship game, the center posted another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Herons to a 64-59 victory over the Bobcats and earn the Tournament MVP award. Cornwell is second in the UCAA and on the team in scoring with 16.8 ppg. She is tied for the team lead and fourth in the league in rebounding at 7.9 rpg.

William Smith (7-2) opens conference play this weekend when it hosts Vassar College (6-3) and Rensselaer (6-3) on Jan. 11-12.
