Cornwell reaches 1,000; Herons stun Saints, 63-51

GENEVA, N.Y. -The William Smith College basketball team rallied from a second half deficit to defeat St. Lawrence University 63-51. Senior center Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) dominated the Saints with 25 points and 15 rebounds and recorded her 1,000th point as a Heron.

St. Lawrence jumped out to a 10-4 first-half lead, but William Smith fought its way back and Cornwell reached the milestone on a jumper to give the Herons an 18-17 advantage at the 8:05 mark. The teams traded baskets until senior guard Cara Barbierri (Mt. Anthony's Union/Shaftsbury, Vt.) connected on a three-pointer for a 27-23 Saints lead. William Smith trailed 33-28 at the half despite 12 points from Cornwell.

In the second half, the Saints opened up a 43-36 lead, their largest of the game, but the Herons answered. An NBA-range three-pointer from junior forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) cut the lead to 47-46 with 8:34 remaining and a Cornwell layup gave William Smith the lead for good at the 8:01 mark. The Heron defense held the Saints to just two field goals over last 9:09, outscoring the Saints 17-4 to go on to the 63-51 victory.

Cornwell finished with 9-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Hadwin netted 16 points, while first-year guard Maria Atti (Kenmore East/Buffalo, N.Y.) added 10 for William Smith.

Senior forward Nicole Leary (Pioneer Valley Regional/Northfield, Mass.) led St. Lawrence (14-3, 5-1 UCAA) with 14 points and junior forward Megan Dietrichsen (O.H. Platt/Meriden, Conn.) scored 12 points. Senior guard Meredith Eisenhut posted an impressive double-double with 10 points and 12 steals. Barbierri finished with 11 points.

The Herons controlled the glass with a 43-31 advantage in rebounds. William Smith's win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Saints.

The Herons (12-3, 5-1 UCAA) host Clarkson University (7-9, 2-4 UCAA) on Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. The Herons split with the Golden Knights last season.
