Dutchwomen eke out win over Herons, 63-58

February 7, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team nearly pulled off an upset of visiting Union College, but the Dutchwomen held on for a 63-58 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association win. William Smith senior forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) led all scorers with 16 points.

The Herons (8-10, 3-5 UCAA) trailed by as many as 12 in the first half, but used a 6-0 run to close out the stanza and head to the locker room down, 27-21. William Smith could have faced a much larger deficit after committing 16 turnovers and shooting just 9-of-23 from the floor.

Early in the second half, Union (16-1, 7-1) pushed its lead back into double digits and led by 10 at the 15:06 mark, but the Herons used a relentless defense to chip away at the Dutchwomen’s advantage.

William Smith tied the game at the 3:40 mark on a pair of free throws by first-year Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.), but first-year Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) answered with a three-pointer to put Union back in front for good. Eisenhut finished with eight points.

First-year Kate DeSorrento (Catholic Central/Schaghticoke, N.Y.) was the only Dutchwoman in double digits with 11 points.

Young contributed 13 points and five assists, while sophomore Tara Brisson (Bishop Grimes/Liverpool, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points and five assists. First-year Tanya Richvalsky (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) also dropped in 10 points for the Herons.

William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m., on Feb. 8, when Skidmore visits Bristol Gym.
