Hellebush wins 3rd UCAA award in 5 weeks

February 2, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith first-year guard Anne Hellebush (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) closed out a spectacular January with her third Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association award in five weeks. She earned her second UCAA Guard of the Week award of the month to go with a Rookie of the Week accolade.

Hellebush averaged 20.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg, and 1.3 spg in a 2-1 week for the Herons. On Tuesday at Hamilton, she scored 23 points, connecting on a career-high five three-pointers, to lead William Smith past the Continentals, 68-63. Hellebush drained 8-of-15 from the floor, 5-of-6 from long range, and both free throw attempts, while pulling down five boards and handing out three assists. Back in Bristol Gym against St. Lawrence on Friday, she scored 24 points and corralled six boards in a 56-48 loss to the Saints. The following afternoon in a 51-40 win over Clarkson, Hellebush added 15 more points to her total, while pulling down seven rebounds and making two steals.

For the week, she shot 48.9 percent from the floor (22-45), 52.9 percent from three-point range (9-17), and 100 percent from the free throw line (9-9).

After a modest start that saw her score 9.0 ppg and grab 3.5 rpg through the end of December, Hellebush turned her game up a notch or two in January, averaging 13.8 ppg and 4.2 rpg. She also shot better from everywhere—she’s dropped in more than one three-pointer from NBA range—on the floor, improving her field goal percentage (.302 in the first two months to .379 in January), her three-point field goal percentage (.286 to .324), and her free throw percentage (.667 to .906).

Hellebush ranks sixth in the UCAA in scoring (12.6 ppg) and three-pointers made (28) and 11th in three-point field goal percentage (.311). In conference games only, she’s second in free throw percentage (.938, 15-of-16), third in scoring (12.7 ppg), and sixth in three-pointers made (9).

William Smith is 9-8 overall, 4-3 in the UCAA, and in fourth place after the first run through the league slate. The Herons are back in action at 6 p.m., on Feb. 6, at Union.
