Hellebush nets UCAA honor

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith first-year Anne Hellebush (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Guard of the Week for the week ending Jan. 4.

Hellebush helped the Herons to a 1-1 showing in the Williams Winter Classic over the weekend. She led William Smith to a 72-67 victory over Staten Island on Saturday, scoring a career-high 26 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out four assists. The following afternoon she had seven points, two rebounds, and two steals in a 75-40 loss to the host Ephs.

Against CSI, Hellebush knocked down 9-of-20 from the floor, including four three-pointers, and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. For the weekend, she shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from beyond the arc and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Through six games, Hellebush leads the Herons in scoring (11.5 ppg), three-point field goal percentage (.324), and blocked shots (3). In the UCAA rankings, she is fifth in three-point field goals made (34), ninth in scoring and three-point field goal percentage, and 15th in blocked shots.

William Smith is back in action tonight at Nazareth College. Tipoff with the Golden Flyers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
