Herons outrace Thoroughbreds 60-43

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College held visiting Skidmore College to just 12 points in the first half, cruising to a 63-40 victory in UCAA women’s basketball action this evening in Bristol Gym. Junior Tara Brisson (Bishop Grimes/Liverpool, N.Y.) led all scorers with 11 points, as all 13 Herons got into the scoring column.

William Smith (7-6, 2-1 UCAA) played stifling defense, holding the Thoroughbreds scoreless until the 14:02 mark and forcing eight turnovers. Skidmore (5-10, 0-4 UCAA) cut the lead to four over the next two minutes, but the Herons wouldn’t let them get any closer pulling away 21-5 with a 13-1 run over the next 6:29.

The Heron defense held the Thoroughbreds to 26.3 percent shooting in the opening stanza and forced 16 turnovers to take a 25-12 lead into the break. William Smith shot just 22.2 percent, but converted 9-of-11 from the charity stripe.

William Smith improved its shooting performance in the second half and stretched the lead to 44-20 by the 10:19 mark and never looked back. The Herons received 25 points from the bench in the second half after getting just three in the opening session.

First-year forward Ashley Rodger (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) turned in another double-digit performance with 10 points and five boards, while rookie Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) led players off the bench with seven points. Senior Stephanie Leveille (Ossining/Ossining, N.Y.) handed out a game-high four assists.

Sophomore Lauren Jones (The Gilbert School/Winsted, Conn.) led Skidmore with nine points and six caroms. Junior Shanely Irving (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) pulled down a game-best nine boards.
