Herons roll to 32-point win

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team used an 8-0 run late in the first half to build a 12-point halftime advantage, en route to a 78-46 win over visiting Fredonia State University in Bristol Gym this evening. Senior forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) posted game-highs in points and rebounds with 22 and 11, respectively, to pace the Herons.

Following a pair of William Smith (4-3) baskets to open the contest, the Blue Devils (5-6) got off to a promising start, scoring the next 10 points to build a 10-4 lead just over three minutes into the game. Senior forward Kim Guenther (Lancaster/Lancaster, N.Y.) and junior forward Clare Crowley (Mt. Mercy/Buffalo, N.Y.) keyed the spurt with four points each. Guenther finished with a team-high 16 points.

The Herons responded with an 8-2 run to knot the contest at 12 with 12:50 remaining. They took the lead for good at the 10:12 mark, building a double digit lead by the break.

In the second half, William Smith harassed Fredonia into 18 turnovers, converting them into 25 points. For the game, the Blue Devils coughed the ball up 32 times, while the Herons committed just 13.

William Smith shot a season-high 50.8 percent from the floor (33-of-65), including a 9-of-16 effort by Hadwin. Sophomore guard Tara Brisson (Selinsgrove/Liverpool, N.Y.) added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

The Herons also posted a season-high nine blocked shots led by first-year forward Tanya Richvalsky’s (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) four and three from Hadwin.

William Smith returns to action at 7 p.m., on Jan. 14, at Buffalo State.
